South African Wine Festival - Discover The Swartland

About this Event

The Leeuwenkuil family estate is situated in the Agter-Paarl area of the Western Cape, which is to the west of Paarl, Agter-Paarl is Afrikaans for behind Paarl. This is where the Swartland region begins. Leeuwenkuil means Lion’s Lair or den in Afrikaans and the early history of the farm records Cape Lions, now extinct, roaming the farm. The estate was acquired by the Dreyers family in 1851 who continue to farm it to this day. It was a mixed use farm at that time, which included lots of grain farming. The modern era of the winery began in 1963 when Willie Dreyer purchased the farm from his family members and began planting vines and restoring the property to its appearance in the early 1700s.

After a few decades of selling grapes to co-operatives, the Dreyer family decided it was time to start making wines under their own label. Their wines are terroir driven and match beautifully with food.

We will taste 6 Leeuwenkuil wines with head winemaker Pieter Carstens. Cheese and Charcuterie (including biltong!) sharing platters included in the ticket price.
