Description

“What a moving film. It did what film should do; move your soul. I came out speechless. It really winded me”— Sue-Kim, Artist & Scriptwriter

This event will premiere a 15 minute short film titled 'Left At Tovarnik' which is set on the Hungarian/Croatian border during the height of the European refugee crisis as well as a Q&A with the filmmakers and speakers.

About the Film:

Shot over three days as Hungary hit the headlines at the height of the refugee crisis in September 2015, Left at Tovarnik aims to give a human and personal insight into the experiences faced by families and their struggles for a better future. After being turned away from the Hungarian camps, the refugees were forced to board coaches back to Croatia where they awaited help, information and hope for a place to go from Tovarnik station.
This intimate and moving film tells the stories of real people during a fragment of their journey.

"Jasmine's film was incredibly poignant and thought provoking - still got it in my head this morning!" - Jackie Bissett, Fashion illustrator

"The film was brilliant, very thought provoking" - Annette Routledge

Ticket donations:

50% of the money raised from this event will go to the Brighton based charity INTO Giving, the remaining 50% will go to distributing the film further to raise awareness of the ongoing situation. INTO Study who run the INTO Giving charity, have also kindly offered to match all funds raised for the charity from this event. So the amount you donate will be doubled for the charity!

This year INTO Giving will be continuing to fund the Jusoor School for Syrian refugees in Lebanon. We are currently in discussions about what this years funding will be used for; options include transport to get the children to school, a counsellor to assist the teachers and children or giving older students the options of taking an international qualification, which would be better suited for the world they now find themselves in.

Speakers & Q/A:

Q&A with the filmmakers. Speakers from INTO Giving about their work and refugee case studies. Jaz O Hara (Founder of The Worldwide Tribe) TBC. More speakers TBC.

About INTO Giving

INTO Giving is an education charity that helps increase access to education and improve the quality of teaching and learning in order to fight poverty and create a more equal world. The UN Human Development Report has identified refugees and women as being amongst the most vulnerable groups of 2016. This is why INTO Giving has chosen to focus our support for projects around those that help Syrian refugee children and girls get access to education.

Last year we donated £8,500 to pay for the refurbishment of the Jusoor School in Beirut which currently teaches 320 refugee children. The school is providing not only an education but much needed hope to hundreds of Syrian children whose lives and families have been destroyed by war by acting as a safe, reliable and familiar space.
