About this event

Why should you attend?

· Nurses should attend leg ulcer care training because it equips them with the specialised knowledge and skills needed to manage this common and challenging condition effectively

· Leg ulcers especially venous and arterial ulcers can be complex to treat and slow to heal. Specialised training helps nurses understand best practices for assessment, treatment, and prevention to enhance patient quality of life.

· Training teaches evidence-based strategies for preventing recurrence such as compression therapy

· It enhances nurses' assessment skills to help ensure correct diagnoses and effective tailored treatment plans

· Training provides nurses with the confidence and competence to use compression safely and effectively.


What skills would they take away?

· Nurses will learn how to assess leg ulcers accurately including identifying ulcer types (e.g., venous, arterial, mixed, diabetic)

· The above skill is foundational to selecting the right dressing and treatment plan

· Ulcer measurement and documentation of key observations

· Compression therapy application

· Skill to determine whether the ulcer is progressing or regressing and supporting as indicated

· Product knowledge- nurses will become familiar with a variety of leg ulcer care products

· Differential diagnosis and referral skills (e.g. to TVN, vascular team, dermatology)

What are the SMART learning outcomes for the course?


Specific-By the end of the course participants will be able to perform a leg ulcer assessment, accurately identifying ulcer types (e.g., venous, arterial, mixed, diabetic)

Participant will be able to select right dressings for different types of leg ulcers

Measurable-This course is delivered by the Community Tissue Viability Team based on the NWCSP

Achievable-During the session, your knowledge and skills will be checked repeatedly to ensure they are imbedded with use of practical demonstrations and the Pose-Pause-Pounce-Bounce technique.

Relevant- All aspects of the session will be relevant to nurses from all clinical settings making sure that participants leave with actionable skills, assessable competencies, and a clear understanding of their role in leg ulcer management

Time-Bound- Healthcare practices are always evolving, and leg ulcer management is no exception. Yearly training ensures that nurses stay up to date with the latest evidence-based practices, products and technologies which are essential for high quality care
