Event description

Description

Event organised by INCA CGIL UK.

Are you an EU/EEA national living in the UK? Worried about your rights and options post-Brexit?

Although the legal status of EU/EEA nationals in the UK will not change until the UK concludes its exit from the European Union, the government has so far refused to guarantee our rights.

Can we take any steps now to safeguard our futures? Join us for an afternoon of advice about Permanent Residency, Settled Status, Citizenship and how they may apply to you.

Agenda:

18:20PM - Doors
18:30PM - Introductions by Cristina Calo', presentation by Bilaal Shabbir, Q&A

Speaker:
Bilaal Shabbir

Bilaal joined MBS Solicitors in 2013. He is an Accredited Paralegal (in family law) with the Law Society of Scotland. He also has extensive experience in immigration law, commercial dispute resolution and professional discipline.

Bilaal heads the firm’s Court of Session practice and is regularly instructed to act in the Court of Session by firms across Scotland especially in respect of attempted last-minute removals from the UK. He also regularly appears in the First-Tier Tribunal and Upper Tribunal (Immigration & Asylum Chamber)

Bilaal regularly acts as a consultant to practitioners across the UK in respect of complex immigration law matters.

He has also written for the Law Society of Scotland Journal discussing the effects of the Immigration Act 2016. He sits on the Immigration and Asylum Committee of the Law Society of Scotland. He has drafted calls for written evidence on behalf of the Law Society of Scotland in relation to Destitution, Asylum and Insecure Immigration Status’ in Scotland and on Immigration Detention.

In 2017, he presented a Petition in the European Parliament on how the UK government can amend the current administrative process to allow EU nationals to more easily obtain a right of residence in the interim period leading up to Brexit.

Bilaal is also a regular contributor to Free Movement, one of the UK’s leading immigration and asylum blogs. In September 2017, he organised, hosted and presented at one of the largest immigration conferences ever in Scotland focusing on the impact on immigration law post-Brexit.

Bilaal has been admitted as a Student Member of the Society of Writers to Her Majesty’s Signet and has won the Scottish Paralegal Association 2016 Highly Commended Category in Scotland. He was nominated for Paralegal of the Year 2017 by the Scottish Legal Awards and won Paralegal of the Year 2018.

What topics will be covered?

What is a permanent residency (PR) and a Settled Status (SS) document?
What paperwork will I need for a PR and a SS? What will they cost?
What if I was a student / unemployed / out of the country / on maternity leave during my time in the UK? Can I still apply?
Am I eligible for citizenship / naturalisation?

Is this a free event?
Yes this is a free event supported by INCA UK, an Italian patronage which offers free advice and information on welfare rights, with particular regard to pensions for Italians, Italian speaking people and their relatives, non-Italian people who worked in Italy.

I'm not an EU/EEA national. Can I still come?
Yes, we are happy for British nationals with good intention of supporting their EU friends to come and attend the event!

Can I bring my own questions?
Yes, there will be a Q&A session after the talk.

Can I come and complain about how terrible Brexit is?
THIS EVENT WILL NOT BE A POLITICAL FORUM. As upset as we EU/EEA nationals may be by the result of the referendum, this evening is designed to offer legal advice.
