Description

1 DAY COURSE - 10.00am - 4.00pm Thursday 18th January 2018

We’re offering free Peer Support training to legal professionals working with traumatised clients in legal aid.

Working in legal aid law can be extremely challenging. Clients may be in prison or IRCS where environments are tough, dealing with complex legal situations, leading to high levels of uncertainty and distress. This training will give an overview of mental health issues for people dealing with these conditions, and different ways of contextualising and understanding them.

We will look at how the distress of detainees can affect staff and volunteers, and we’ll explore some coping strategies on how to manage our own reactions and emotions. We will also put in place the core principles of peer support so that as staff or supporters we are better able to support ourselves and others

Topics covered will include:

  • An overview of mental health and the language and models we use
  • Distress and trauma, and bearing witness to distress and trauma
  • Coping strategies
  • The foundations of peer support and how to create a peer support group
  • Passion, compassion and self-care

Someone who attended one of our recent trainings gave this description of their experience: "I learnt how to manage setting up and holding a space whilst having to deal with limited capacity and how to set boundaries. I’ve also learnt how we can move away from the pathologisation of experiences, and why changing my language is important. It was absolutely transformative in the way I manage my own capacity in community activism and when supporting friends and other activists, and has allowed me to take on more, because I am confident in setting out what I can and can’t do in any role, so I can avoid burn out or feeling overwhelmed."

FEES

The training is free for legal aid lawyers working in prisons and Immigration Removal Centres.
