Event description

Description

Do you know where you stand legally with your volunteers? The legal position of voluntary workers can look complicated from the outside – some areas of law impact on volunteering, while others completely ignore it, leaving volunteers without protection from unfair dismissal or discrimination. This training will give you an overview of the relevant law in plain English, focusing on practical lessons to draw from the information.

This workshop will be of use to volunteer managers, and anyone within a volunteer-involving organisation who needs to know where they stand legally in relation to their volunteers, such as chief executives or trustees.

It will cover:

  • Avoiding employment relations with volunteers

  • Health and Safety

  • Safeguarding and DBS checks

  • Expenses and benefits

  • Involving specific volunteers – e.g. ex-offenders and people from overseas

Learning objectives:

By the end of the training attendees will

  • Have a good understanding of the general legal position of volunteers.

  • Know key steps to take to avoid creating employment relationships

  • Understand their health and safety and safeguarding responsibilities

  • Be aware of issues related to specific volunteers, such as benefit claimants

Please note that lunch will not be provided.

The training will be delivered by Mark Restall, a freelance trainer and consultant. Mark is not a lawyer, but is the author of Volunteers and the Law, which will shortly be republished as an online resource by NCVO. Mark has worked in volunteer management support roles for over 15 years. He has worked at both a national and local level, and prior to his freelance career was Head of Information at Volunteering England.

We would prefer you to book online via this site, but if you require an invoice please contact Mark directly: restallmark@gmail.com
