Legal Practice Conversation Series: Oliver Gilman, Government Legal Service
Fri 11 November 2016, 18:30 – 20:30 GMT
The Legal Practice Conversation series aims to provide students with first-hand insight into how law works in practice – beyond case law and textbooks!
Oliver Gilman, Senior Lawyer, Department of Health, Government Legal Service will be talking with Daniel Monk about the day-to-day life of working as a solicitor employed by the government. The Government Legal Service is a progressive employer and this will be an opportunity to explore careers options with them.
The conversation will also focus on two recent high profile cases which he was involved in, where government policies have been challenged through the courts. The first relates to government aid to Ethiopia and the second to junior doctors conditions of employment. The case references are here:
R (on the application of O) v Secretary of State for International Development EWHC 2371 (QB) (Judgment on Permission)
R (on the application of Justice for Health Limited) v Secretary of State for Health and NHS Confederation and the BMA EWHC 2338 (Admin)
The Legal Practice Conversation reflects a commitment by the school to extend its existing links with the profession in order to complement the teaching of law by academics and to provide students with an opportunity to ask questions about working in the law. If any alumni are interested in speaking at these events please contact Daniel Monk.
