Legal Structures

Understanding and selecting a legal structure for your social enterprise can seem confusing and daunting, with lots of apparently conflicting guidance and advice from different sources, and much of the language associated with them appearing to have been written in 'legal-ese', rather than plain English.

This workshop will offer an introduction and overview of the different options available to social enterprises as part of their incorporation, as well as tools to help you navigate them to find a 'best fit' choice:

  • Looking at the various researches into how social enterprises choose their legal form, and the implications these have on their future success;
  • Offering a summary pros and cons of each legal form that may be being considered;
  • Profiling the expectations that the regulators of different legal structures have, to make sure that a social enterprise avoids getting into legal problems with them;
  • Introducing tools to help identify and select what might be the best (or worst) legal form to adopt in light of the social enterprises' business model and future aspirations.

About Adrian:

Despite being awarded an honorary doctorate in business support, and being a Lord, most agree that Adrian Ashton is able to help anyone understand what they had previously thought too complex for them to be able to do themselves: his introductory sessions on bookkeeping and understanding accounts have seen people subsequently fire their accountants; and people have shared how they feel more confident in being able to 'look after' the legal form of their social enterprise without needing to involve solicitors or lawyers, after he has been able to translate the legal jargon associated with them into plain English.

Adrian is a recognised authority on legal structures for social enterprises, having been asked to draft feature articles on this subject for various national sector bodies and media organisations, and for the ongoing research he conducts and publishes at his own cost, on behalf of the wider sector."
