You think you know London’s history. But do you know the fictions that have shaped the city?
Travel back in time on this walking tour to discover the late-medieval legends that have defined London’s sites and streets for centuries.
You will learn about how London has been built and developed by migrants, starting with its legendary foundation by Trojan refugees. You'll hear stories of King Arthur's reign, of the giants who became gatekeepers of the city, and even some prophecies of the wizard Merlin. You'll be invited to discuss these myths and share your own London stories along the way.
After the walking tour, we will move indoors for a discussion of London’s fictions and migrations past and present. Before you go, send pre-stamped postcards to family or friends to share your favourite London legend.
This is an inclusive event open to anyone aged 16 and above and interested in London's stories. Our journey begins outside the Tower of London Welcome Centre and ends in Guildhall Yard. Both tours will be led by Dr Jaclyn Rajsic (Senior Lecturer in Medieval Literature at Queen Mary University of London). Please select either the 10am or 2pm tour when booking.
This event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 6 - 15 November 2025. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
