Why Training Matters

Training is important to improve the day-to-day running of your organisation and to ensure you are sufficiently informed to meet your legal duty of care.

This event aims to inform an understanding of Legionella bacteria as well as the responsibilities required to remain legally compliant. Furthermore, it provides advice from independant leading experts in the field and cover real case studies, and the legal fall out in more detail to share experience of what can happen when things go wrong, so others can learn from the valuable examples provided.

Who Would Be Interested?

This training seminar is aimed at duty holders and appointed responsible persons for your building. Delegates will most likely be either:

Training will fulfil the requirement for those responsible to have introductory knowledge on the main aspects of legionella and Legionnaires’ disease, and to understand their role or can equally be used as a refresher to previous training that may have been undertaken.

About the Contributors

John Newbold - Principal Specialist Inspector for the HSE Retd
John previously worked for 26 years as a Principal Specialist Inspector for the Health and Safety Executive, accumulating a wealth of regulatory experience. In his role as a regulator John spent much of his time working in the field of Legionella control and was Chair of HSE’s Legionella Technical Working Group anda member of HSE’s Legionella Committee.

John has advised Government and professional bodies both within the UK and overseas, and played a key role in the development of UK legionella guidance including his role as joint author of the 2013 revision of L8: Approved Code of Practice, HSG274 legionella technical guidance. He has also contributed to the production of numerous Legionella-related guidance documents including:

  • BS 8580:2010
  • CIBSE’s TM13: 2013
  • Department of Health’s HTM0401 2016
  • HSG282 ‘Control of legionella and other infectious agents in spa pool systems

Dennis Kelly, Senior Consultant/AE
Experienced legionella consultant, having supported both end users and supplier companies in all aspects of legionella risk minimisation. For a number of years Dennis had responsibility for the European water hygiene operation of the world’s largest water treatment company. This role covered the operation of legionella specialists in various countries including the UK, France, Spain, Holland, Belgium, Germany and Italy as well as technically supporting operations in Turkey, Poland, the Middle East and the USA.

Micheal Crook MSc, Director, SMS Environmental Ltd
Mike is an experienced water treatment consultant with vast experience in all building types. His research has been published in the Journal of Water Reuse and Desalination and his has regualrly presented at a number of conferences including BiFM (South West) Regional Conference (Grey Water Recycling – The Future), as well as continuing to provide CIBSE accredited Legionella Awareness Training across the UK.
