Leicester welcomed royal visitors in 1882 when Abbey Park was officially opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales. Originally smaller than the present park it was later extended to include the site of the 12th century Leicester Abbey, perhaps best known for being the place of Cardinal Wolsey’s death in 1530. Featuring sites of historical interest such as Abbot Penny’s Wall and Cavendish house alongside modern recreation facilities that include an ornamental boating lake and Pets’ Corner, Abbey Park’s mix of the old and the new continues to be popular with the residents of Leicester. After 135 years, the park still has something for all ages!
