Event description

Description

This 8-mile walk is offered as part of the Greater Manchester Walking Festival 2019.

Having assembled at Leigh bus station (by the TfGM TravelShop) at 10.15am, for a prompt 10.30am start, we follow a mixture of old and new footpaths, towpaths, and bridleways from Leigh town centre eastwards through the old mining areas.

At around lunchtime, we arrive at Lancashire Mining Museum, Astley, where we break for 60-90 minutes. While there, we can enjoy a visit to the industrial heritage on display (optional, for a donation of £3, payable to the museum) and enjoy a cuppa or light snack in the museum cafe. Visitors can brink a packed lunch if they prefer. After the lunch stop, it's an easy return along the canal back to Leigh, where we will arrive between 4.30pm and 5pm (approximately).

The paths used are mainly flat, with one section with a few ups and downs near Higher Folds. There are likely to be some muddy sections and puddles, so walking boots or outdoor-style trainers are advisable.
