Event description
A lecture that sheds light on Leighton's interest for Spanish art and culture, delivered by art historian Véronique Gerard Powell

About this Event

Leighton's attraction for Spain, although fascinating, is little-researched and it is only known through half a dozen landscape studies, often unidentified, and a lecture given to the students of the Royal Academy in 1889.

Leighton visited the peninsula at least four times, between 1865 and 1889 and his artistic production inspired by the country expressed his freedom of spirit, as are his bold plein-air views of Andalusia’s mountainous countryside, far from the taste of his contemporaries for picturesque daily-life scenes.

Two paintings related to the city of Cadiz reflect his wonder for its seaside landscape and night life; drawings in a notebook speak of his interest in Moorish engineering; he produced the first known painting of the 'Generalife' patio in Granada and sketched a cloistered women monastery in Seville, two important contributions to the research of these historic buildings.

About Véronique Gerard Powell

A former Associate Professor in History of Art at the University of Paris-Sorbonne, where she spent most of her academic career, Véronique Gerard Powell has devoted the essential of her research activity to Spanish art. After initially specialising in Spanish Renaissance architecture, with a PhDiss on the former Royal palace of Madrid, she moved onto studying Spanish Painting, assisting and curating various exhibitions of Spanish art as well as cataloguing collections of Spanish paintings in French Museums: Grenoble, (2000) and Louvre (2002, with Claudie Ressort). This led to a strong interest in the history of collecting and the European taste for Spanish painting during the 18th to early 20th centuries, a topic on which she has written several articles and has a book in progress. Lately, she has been attracted to Victorian Art and assisted curating the exhibition ‘A Victorian Obsession: The Pérez Simón Collection’, shown at Leighton House Museum in 2014.
