What's the event about?

Provision for “leisure reading” or “reading for pleasure” is a growing concern within academic libraries. Both of these terms are used interchangeably to mean reading that is done primarily for enjoyment. This includes the reading of fiction or non-fiction books and there is a recognition that such reading can have a positive impact upon academic performance.
Strands for the exchange include, but are not limited to:

• Book groups within academic libraries

• Partnerships with public library services

• Stock selection and collection management for leisure reading

• Promotion and marketing to students

A Manchester based company, Wakelet, is sponsoring the lunch and refreshments at the event and will also make a presentation of their product. Wakelet is a bookmarking service that allows the gathering together of web links in an attractive way.

Speakers will be from Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Salford, Manchester Public Library and the University of Loughborough. There will also be a presentation from a bibliotherapist.

Staff at the University of Salford have recently had an article about their leisure reading collection published in the New Review of Academic Librarianship. Read the full article here: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/13614533.2017.1371612
