Lemn Sissay poetry performance, preceded by a performance of Chartist poetry with Michael Sanders and Jennifer Reid
Lemn Sissay MBE is the author of several books of poetry alongside articles, records, public art, and plays. He was an official poet for the London Olympics. His Landmark Poems are installed throughout Manchester and London, in venues such as The Royal Festival Hall and The Olympic Park. Sissay is associate artist at Southbank Centre, patron of The Letterbox Club and The Reader Organisation, and inaugural trustee of World Book Night.
The performance of Chartist Poetry will feature Chartist historian Michael Sanders and singer Jennifer Reid.
Singing played a vital role in the Chartist movement which produced songs and hymns in abundance. Many of these songs are now lost to us, but some survive. In this show, Dr Mike Sanders, 'The Radical Antiquarian,' and Jennifer Reid, 'The Broadside Balladress,' use the only surviving Chartist hymn book as a launch-pad to explore Chartist history. They will perform the songs and words of the Chartists themselves.
