Description

From 12.30 ‘Let’s beat knives!’ public event

This event is free to attend but advance registration is requested

We invite you to join us at a public event in East London, part of a national launch programme for Red Letter Christians UK, a new interdenominational network of people with a passion for social justice.

Several hundred people from across the local community – from all faiths and none – will gather to take a united stand against the culture of violence and epidemic of knife crime in our city.

Taking knives seized from the streets of Newham, we’ll melt them down to make new garden tools and a stunning new sculpture for display in the garden. Under the guidance of our expert metalsmith and two blacksmiths, local young people will be helping to create the new pieces.

Our guest speaker is Shane Claiborne, one of the founders of Red Letter Christians in the US, who is visiting to support the Red Letter Christians UK launch programme. The event is organised by Bonny Downs Baptist Church and kindly hosted by the local charity Bonny Downs Community Association.

The main part of the event will run until 13.30, and all are welcome to stay until around 14.30 and join us in making collaborative artwork, to chat and network, or to enjoy some drinks and food from our mobile vendors onsite

Please be aware there is limited parking at the venues and 'permit holder only' parking on the streets. Four hours of free parking is available nearby next to Central Park on Rancliffe Road..Or use public transport: our nearest tube station is East Ham, around 20 minutes’ walk away, and there are many bus routes serving nearby Barking Road and High Street South.
