Let's celebrate the Year of the Ox with Longevity Noodles and Spring Rolls!

About this Event

Let's celebrate Chinese New Year!

We will be making Spring Rolls and Longevity Noodles, all plant-based!

They are made with a special type of noodle that are usually sold in the form of cakes.  The noodles are left long and uncut thus symbolising longevity.  It is an auspicious dish to eat for Chinese New Year.  Our vegan version includes a savory preparation of shiitake mushrooms, which will be used to substitute for protein in the dish.  In fact, it is a typical practice to not eat meat on the first day of the new year to ensure an auspicious year.

  • Pot for boiling noodles
  • Large frying pan

  • - Longevity noodles, (can substitute for pasta noodles)
  • - Chinese cabbage, sliced
  • - Stalks green onions
  • - Dried shiitake mushrooms
  • - Ginger
  • - Garlic
  • - Soy sauce
  • - Sesame oil
  • Cornstarch

In Chinese history, spring rolls were eaten to mark the arrival of spring.  A thin wheat pancake wraps around a mixture of seasoned vegetables and protein.  The golden rolls looked similar to bars of gold and so it came to symbolize wealth and is a food eaten on Chinese New Year.

  • - Medium frying pan
  • - Sheet pan

  • - Mushrooms
  • - Green onions
  • - Carrot, grated
  • - Garlic
  • - Soy sauce
  • - Sugar
  • - Spring roll wrappers or filo pastry
  • - Oil
  • - Chilli sauce for dipping
