Port Sunlight is a pocket of history in the paradise peninsula known for its beautiful buildings and gardens - and the area has a fascinating past. Boasting 900 Grade II listed buildings and 130 acres of stunning gardens, the area has well and truly stood the test of time.
The village recently provided the backdrop for filming of Peaky Blinders - the gritty, Brummie drama that follows the life and crimes of the Shelby family.
But Port Sunlight is famous enough in its own right for its unique history since it was first founded by William Hesketh Lever in 1888.The ‘soap king’ was Bolton-born industrialist, philanthropist and politician - and later became a Wirral MP.
Following apprenticeships and a series of appointments in the family business - which he successfully expanded - Lever began to manufacture “Sunlight Soap” - which is now the world-famous Unilever. In 1886 the industrialist, with his brother James, established Lever Brothers - which was one of the first soaps to be manufactured from vegetable oils.
We'll visit this beautiful village, and view its gorgeous gardens and buildings.
