About this event

  • 2 hours

If Elon Musk spent $1m dollars a day, it would take him 500 years to spend all his money. If they wanted to, the world's 2700 billionaires have enough money to give every person on earth $1500. In terms of wrecking the climate, the average Ethiopian is responsbile for 0.2 tonnes of carbon emissions per year, whilst the average billionaire is responsible for 4500 tonnes.

These eyewatering facts demonstrate that there is something seriously wrong in the world today. The few people who are accumulating such vast wealth are not interested in redistributing it, and nor are they pressured to do so. Politicians don't seem to be particularly interested in any form of radical policy that could limit the money grab. And bar a few, the public barely know the names of these people who have the power to do so much with their wealth.

Join us to find out more about the state of affairs and ideas for how to make wealth distribution better.

Speakers

Luke Hildyard is the Director of the High Pay Centre, a UK think tank focused on pay, inequality and worker voice. He has commented on these issues for multiple media outlets including the Guardian, The Times, Financial Times, Daily Mirror, BBC, Sky News, CNN and CNBC. Luke will be discussing his new book "Enough: Why it's Time to Abolish the Super Rich" which argues that a major and transformative policy programme to re-distribute and re-direct the income and wealth of the super-rich to the wider population is the most obvious, effective and immediate way in which politicians could enhance prosperity for large numbers of people.

Peter Robbins is the son of domestic servants and an ex-director of a City trading company. He's written several books on the way markets work, including how they effect small scale producers in developing countries. Peter will be introducing his strategy "Adopt a Billionaire", which calls for a movement to expose the world's 2,700 billionaires for what they are - insatiably greedy and responsible for a significant proportion of the funding of climate-change-denying political parties, individual politicians and think tanks.
