About the Course

Mobile Phone Photography Workshop: Exploring Walsall’s Cut

The canals of Walsall – known locally as “the cut” – have always been part of the town’s identity. From the winding Curly Wyrley (Wyrley & Essington Canal) to the Walsall Cut, Daw End Cut, and Tame Valley Cut, these waterways once carried coal, goods, and working boats through the Black Country. Today, they offer hidden landscapes, reflections, wildlife, and textures that are perfect for photography.

Our six-session workshop over six weeks will use Walsall’s canals as both classroom and subject. Participants will:

• Learn how to use their mobile phone camera creatively.

• Explore the history and heritage of the cut while capturing it in images.

• Practice composition, lighting, and editing skills outdoors.

• Build confidence in storytelling through photography.

• Produce a small body of work inspired by the Walsall waterways.

By the end of the six weeks, attendees will not only have improved their mobile photography but will also see their local canals – the cut – in a new light, as a source of pride, inspiration, and creativity.
