Event description

Description

The White House is hosting an evening meetup to bring together cultural producers working in the arts with people: in community settings, learning projects, or the political sphere.

Let’s Meet! will be an informal evening to share interests and experiences in the field, learn more about current and upcoming projects, and explore both the successes and challenges experienced working in this way. Usually sited outside the gallery, this work in it's complexity and the hive of people that make it happen, can become invisible. We are interested in meeting the people that develop and deliver these projects.

All artists, curators, producers, educators, organisers, administrators, supporters and co-ordinators - at any level in their career, from anywhere in the UK - who are interested in exploring these kind of practices are invited to join us on the evening, hosted by Curator of The White House, Sophie Chapman.

About The White House:

The White House is an artist residency and community space on the Becontree Estate in Dagenham.

Since opening in summer 2016, The White House has hosted six artist residencies. Chad McCail, Patrick Goddard, Christina Ford, Ève Chabanon, Alice Theobald and They Are Here have all lived at the house and joined people living in the area to create new artworks through workshops, collaborative performances and the creation of new community groups.

In this time we have thought about the stories that are told about the area, the experiences of lone mothers living nearby, and debated what constitutes a public. Together with The White House, the resident artists have explored the estate's past, what can be grown and what people can make there. We are interested in the suburban, domestic space as a site for creativity. In this time with the growing community that use the house we have found that before you can think about the personal, private space of home you have to come to terms with the civic.

Let’s Meet! has been developed to celebrate the last year of work produced at The White House, and reach out to connect with other people working in similar spaces in similar ways.

The White House has been commissioned and developed by Create London, with the building redesigned by Apparata. The space is supported by London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, Arts Council England, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Heritage Lottery Fund, Genesis Foundation and the Foyle Foundation.
