About this Event

So we are back with the 3rd instalment of Let’s Shatter the Taboo!

Event to raise awareness about mental health to help support our community

“There is no health without mental health”

Beautiful Trauma presents Let’s Shatter the Taboo, an event taking place at The Front Room Croydon on Saturday 5th October 2019 to raise awareness about suicide and mental health issues in the community.

Our official event host @djmilktray (Milktray’s Motivation); will host the event and introduce a series of speakers, sharing their experiences about mental health issues and provide a forum for those in attendance to ask questions.

The all-male panel will be hosted by Darrel Blake and will include the likes of @djmilktray (Milktray’s Motivation); award winning motivational speaker and Radio Personality who will join the panel during the discussion, Mark Oviri, (Simplify-Ed) and more; this panel will provide a forum for those in attendance to ask questions during the panel discussion. In this panel we will explore Masculinity and how it has an effect on mental health.

*Many men have difficulty expressing emotion due to toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity refers to actions that discourage displays of emotion—other than anger—in men while also encouraging behaviour that will deem the male “dominant” in a given situation. Even as children, young boys who express feelings are compared to girls in a negative context. Common responses to young males who become emotional include:"Boys don’t cry! Man up! Don’t be such a baby! Don’t cry like a girl! Be a man—get over it! You throw like a girl!"

Imagine being a young boy, crying over a painful injury or an emotional heartbreak that feels like the end of the world, and then being told to “man up,” instead of being gently asked what’s making you cry, how you feel about it, and what you think you can do about it.

When feelings are dismissed and gender-defining thinking is heard repeatedly, a young person learns to avoid expressing their real feelings and begins to bottle up sadness. Over time, such behaviour can lead to a dysfunctional emotional expression and ultimately, depression. - *www.psycom.net

Whilst the event has a serious message at its core, organisers want everyone to have fun and be entertained too by the spoken word, live music, refreshments and much more planned for the event.

Everyone is welcome and all will be given an opportunity to network in an inviting and non-threatening space.
