Wed 16 December 2015, 17:30 – 18:30 GMT
Let's Talk About Health: Understanding Disease is all about advancing our knowledge of health and what goes wrong in disease. Join us to hear about new research in our University that is increasing our understanding of diseases and providing new advances in treatment. Guests will be able to talk to our young scientists about their research and will have an opportunity to tour our labs before the talks. We look forward to seeing you there!
Professor Karen Chapman
BHF Centre for Cardiovascular Science
Lung infections, inflammation and lung cancer are major causes of disability and death in the world in people young and old. We know very little about what actually happens deep inside the human lung during life. Scientists have spent decades developing drugs and other experimental treatments to try to find new ways to help patients. Unless we can accurately understand the processes that happen deep inside human lungs, none of these therapeutic advances will rapidly enter clinical care.
Join us to hear about an inter-disciplinary research project that brings together experts in astronomy, engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. The experts, from three universities, have united with a common goal to help us ‘ see the light ‘ in the lung. The first clinical trials of the new technologies will be happening this year in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. The evening will also include interactive demonstrations before the talk begins.
