Join us for a new collaborative research seminar organised between the Cancer Research UK Manchester and Barts Centres to promote inclusive research activities.

Hosted every two months, this new series aims to shine a spotlight on various equality, diversity, inclusivity topics in cancer research.

Our first seminar focuses on LGBTQ+ in cancer research.

About our Speakers

Professor Nick Lemoine

Professor Nick Lemoine is Professor of Molecular Oncology and Institute Director at Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London. Professor Lemoine is Director of the Cancer Research UK Barts Centre and Medical Director of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network for England.

Among other commitments, Professor Lemoine is the Chair of Trustees of the Medical Research Foundation, Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases, and Africa Research Excellence Fund, and the Chair of the COVID-19 urgent public health studies group for the UK.

Professor Kairbaan Hodivala-Dilke

Professor Kairbaan Hodivala-Dilke is Professor of Tumour Microenvironment and Deputy Institute Director at Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London, where she leads the Centre for Tumour Microenvironment. Professor Hodivala-Dilke is the Deputy Director of the Cancer Research UK Barts Centre.

Professor Rob Bristow

Professor Robert Bristow is Director of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, Director of the Cancer Research UK Manchester Centre, Professor of Cancer Studies in the Division of Cancer Sciences (The University of Manchester) and Chief Academic Officer at The Christie. His Translational Oncogenomics laboratory within the CRUK Manchester Institute focuses on the role of the tumour microenvironment on therapeutic resistance and metastases and the genetic basis for aggression in both sporadic and hereditary prostate cancers.

Professor Caroline Dive

After completing her PhD studies in Cambridge, Caroline moved to Aston University's School of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Birmingham where she started her own group studying mechanisms of drug induced tumour cell death. She then moved to what became the Faculty of Life Sciences at The University of Manchester to continue this research. Caroline was awarded a Lister Institute of Preventative Medicine Research Fellowship before moving to the CRUK Manchester Institute in 2003. Here she set up the Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology Group interfacing with the Derek Crowther Unit for early clinical trials at The Christie. To reflect the focus on biomarker research, the group changed its name to the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute Cancer Biomarker Centre in 2019. Caroline is currently the Interim Director and Senior Group Leader at the CRUK Manchester Institute and Professor of Pharmacology at The University of Manchester.

Dr Dan Saunders

Dr Dan Saunders is a consultant in Clinical Oncology based at The Christie. Beyond his clinical work in sarcoma and paediatric radiotherapy, he has contributed to the equality, diversity and inclusivity agenda across the NHS since he was a medical student. Dan is an active participant in The Christie EDI Programme Board, has supported the RCR in setting up an EDI committee and is a regular contributor to the NHS Confederation “Senior LGBTQ+ leaders’ forum” and their guiding group. With colleagues Dan has evaluated and recognised the need for better education and training for cancer professionals so that they might be better equipped to care for LGBTQ+ patients who have cancer and this has included developing a training programme for ESMO and also a distinguished guest speaker educational session at “RCR Learning Live” in 2021.

Formerly Dan has been chair of GLADD – The LGBTQ+ Association of Doctors and Dentists, has been a Stonewall Health Champion and has been recognised by the HSJ as one of the NHS’ most influential LGBTQ+ leaders. Throughout his work, Dan has recognised the need for better and more consistent research into how to provide better care for LGBTQ+ people who have cancer and that a more systematic approach would support progress in this important area of cancer care
