Black History Month Lecture

Please note that the venue for this event has changed and the talk will now be held in Room C/A/102, Chemistry (MAP).

Kevin Hylton’s lecture Let’s talk about ‘race’ is a timely one that centres the challenges of higher education in regard to race equality, diversity, and BAME student experiences. His presentation will provoke us to consider the everyday challenges of managing racial inequalities, institutional discrimination and everyday racism. As a Patron of the ECU/Advance HE Race Equality Charter and renowned Critical Race Theorist, Professor Hylton emphasises the significance of ‘race’ in HE and the embedded complexities of racism. Insights draw on his extensive experience as Professor of Equality and Diversity, Head of the Centre for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and founding chair of the Leeds Beckett Race Equality and Diversity Forum.

Kevin Hylton

Kevin Hylton is Professor of Equality and Diversity in Sport, Leisure and Education. He is also Head of the Research Centre for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. His research focuses on the nature and extent of 'race', racism and racialisation in sport, leisure and education.

As the first black Professor in over 75 years of Carnegie history, Professor Hylton brings a voice to the sociology of sport and leisure that reflects an intricate engagement with, and commitment to challenge, the endemic issues that mark race relations in the UK.

Kevin is Board Member for the International Review for the Sociology of Sport (IRSS) and the new Journal of Global Sport Management. He is also Chair of the Leeds Beckett Race Equality and Diversity Forum, Patron of the Equality Challenge Unit Race Equality Charter Mark.
