Letter Cutting with The Lettering Arts Trust
Sat 6 May 2017, 11:00 – 12:00 EDT
Six leading letter carvers - Charlotte Howarth, Martin Cook, Annet Stirling, Wayne Hart, Tom Perkins and Lois Anderson discuss the creation of artworks for the home, garden and public spaces. They explain the letter design and cutting process, as well as demonstrating and showcasing a selection of their working drawings and finished pieces.
The Lettering Arts Trust presents a showcase of the contemporary craft of letter carving, with six leading letter carvers discussing their work to design and carve letters to create beautiful artworks for the home, garden and public spaces, in a range of materials. Though their work is found in private homes, gardens and public buildings across the country, their skills are seldom acknowledged.
This event will showcase the hard-won skills that have been handed down through generations and the artists will reveal their working drawings, talk about their approach to a variety of commissions from garden artworks to architectural commissions, unusual memorials and public works. In a panel discussion they will explain the inspiration and process that leads to the finished result and the technical challenges encountered along the way. There will be then an open studio where the artists will demonstrate their letter design and carving techniques.
The Lettering Arts Trust is an independent charity which champions Britain’s rich heritage in the lettering arts, from letter carving to calligraphy. They raise awareness of this important tradition and manage a portfolio of training opportunities to pass on the time-honoured skills to tomorrow’s artists. They help clients interested in commissioning a lettered work of art, using their register of some of the finest letter carvers in the country.
