Description

INSCRIPTIONS: SO WHAT? the seventh talk of the 2017/18 lecture season is given by Giles Macdonald.

Once upon a time people always carved inscriptions, now not so much. Inscriptions have been replaced by signage and printed and digital forms of communication. And yet still we make them. Perhaps because inscriptions are objects and their appeal can extend beyond the words used. We sense this when we are attracted to inscriptions carved in a language we don't know. Or there's a relationship between the horizontal lines of an inscription and the physical horizon around us. Inscriptions become a way of exploring the wider world, and an acknowledgement of being alive.
