Event description
David Howells: the work and play of a curious, inventive calligrapher. The eighth lecture of 20/21 will be given by Nancy Ouchida-Howells

About this event

David and Nancy Ouchida-Howells worked and taught together for over 30 years, giving Nancy a unique insight into the way David developed images into patterns of pen and brush movements. By enriching the lettering images with texture and colour using a variety of techniques, he created modern word paintings. All his work carried his “thrill of the pen”- the spirit of David.

David was a calligrapher and artist who worked with many materials including clay, fabric, wood, paper, cut card, potato, metal, watercolours, pen, paper, stencils. He had a unique approach and vision, such as drawing from nature, making colour studies of flowers, composing concrete poetry, and always writing and drawing with the same tool.

Teaching was an important aspect of his life and he loved and respected his students. He taught widely in both Britain and internationally.
