Event description
Printing and publishing books by letterpress. The seventh lecture of the 20/21 season will be given by Pat Randle

About this event

Pat is a calligrapher, lettering artist, publisher of books printed by letterpress.

I’d like to give a presentation on my most recent publication, 2020 Vision, a collaboration with the Society of Wood Engravers in which is featured work by 20 of todays' best-known engravers. These engravers have each been asked to choose their 'artistic inspiration’ - and a wood-engraved block by both engraver and inspirer sit side by side in the book, accompanied by a short essay on why that person has been chosen as an inspiration.

During my talk I’d like to talk about the challenges of printing books by letterpress, and specifically, 2002 Vision, which features some 100 year old blocks. I’d like to talk about growing up at the Whittington Press which was started by my Dad in the ’70s and include some words on Anna Parker, the printer of 2020 Vision who has been working as an unofficial ‘apprentice’ here for the last 2 and a half years and how that has, to an extent, changed the way in which we work.

I’d also like to discuss in more general terms why we print from type cast by Monotype (which we cast on site) and why we publish books by letterpress.
