Event description

Description

Come and print a short edition of a one or two colour poster using wood and metal type. You don't need any design or art skills. I will guide you and advise on layout and colour, and what can be achieved using the process.

All materials will be provided. I use quality Colorplan papers by G.F. Smith but special cotton papers are available for an extra cost.

My studio, Muttons & Nuts, is in an idyllic setting on top of Bishop Burton wold with views towards Beverley and the sounds of swallows chattering (in the summer) and cows mooing (in the winter).

If this date isn't good for you please get it touch and we can arrange an alternative.

What can I print?

It’s up to you but you some options are:

  • Song lyrics: Around 10 lines of text from your favourite song with some words or the song title picked out with larger wood type. Or a single line from a song using larger type.
  • Poetry: Perhaps there's a poem you particularly like and would like as a framed print. It shouldn't be too long though.
  • Quote: You might have a quote or statement that you would like to see as an art print. We can work together to design a print to creatively present the text.

What you’ll learn

  • An introduction to composition and lock up of metal and wood type
  • Inking up using either flat-colour or creative hand-inking, or both
  • Press operation on the flat bed cylinder press or manual proofing press
  • Snippets of interesting traditional printing terminology

What you’ll take home

  • 10–20 copies of your print which you can then have framed. We’ll work to standard A size (maximum A3) which should fit standard retail frames. Or you can work to a non-standard size and have it framed professionally. There is a framer on site at Calf House Studios.

What do I need to bring?

  • I will provide an apron to protect your clothing from ink and oil, but it's best to wear some old clothes just in case!
  • A packed lunch. I will provide tea, coffee and cake/biscuits.
