Description

***PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE TO THE PREVIOUSLY ADVERTISED START TIME***

Explore the basics of letterpress on this day workshop. You will spend the morning working on the Albion press to make improvised backgrounds using wood type and lasercut shapes to explore inking techniques. You will then cut these parent sheets down and use the tabletop Adana press to set and print one or two lines of smaller metal type. The aim is to briefly introduce you to a couple of approaches to using letterpress and enable you to think about next steps.

What experience do I need?
This one day course is aimed at the absolute beginner.
There will be a small group size of no more than 6 participants.

What will I make?
You will make a small set of unique A5 postcards and you could also keep back one of the larger parent sheets as an example of the process.

Who is my tutor?
David Armes is an artist working with letterpress as his primary medium. His Red Plate Press studio is based on the border between West Yorkshire and Lancashire and from here he makes prints, chapbooks and music packaging. He was shortlisted for the 2017 Flourish award for excellence in printmaking and regularly works as an artist-in-residence (Huddersfield Art Gallery, 2016; Wells Book Arts Center, New York, 2017; BBC Radio Lancashire, 2017).

Do I need to bring anything?
All the inks, papers, tools and equipment needed will be provided by Leeds Print Workshop.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?
We will refund you in full if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the first session of the course, after which no refunds will be issued. Once booked, you cannot transfer to another course.

What if the course is cancelled?
We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.

Accessibility
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible but, due to the nature of the building, Leeds Print Workshop is not wheelchair accessible. There is a step up into the building and four steps down to the toilets, and no accessible toilet facilities. Should you have any questions, or wish to discuss accessibility before booking, please don't hesitate to email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
