Event description

Description

Explore the wonders of letterpress on this one day workshop working with our brand new wood type (plus some well-used old type!). You will work on our 19th Century traditional Albion press and our galley proof press to make a small edition of two colour posters. You'll learn a simple technique for how to set up wood type for printing and have the chance to explore creative approaches to inking the type. The aim is to extend your knowledge of letterpress (if you’ve already done our Taster Day course) or to introduce you to working with wood type (if you haven’t).
Along the way you'll learn plenty of letterpress terminology and fascinating printing stories, leaving with some colourful prints and a head full of ideas for next steps.

What experience do I need?

This course is aimed at beginners or those who have previously attended our Letterpress Taster Day and wish to explore the process further.

What will I make?

You will come away with a small edition of unique two colour posters printed onto A3 paper.

Who is my tutor?

David Armes is an artist working primarily with letterpress. His Red Plate Press studio is based on the border between West Yorkshire and Lancashire and from here he makes prints, chapbooks and music packaging. He was shortlisted for the 2017 Flourish award for excellence in printmaking and regularly works as an artist-in-residence (Zygote Press fine art printmaking studio, Cleveland, Ohio, 2018; BBC Radio Lancashire, 2017; Huddersfield Art Gallery, 2016).

What if the course is cancelled?

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible but, due to the nature of the building, Leeds Print Workshop is not wheelchair accessible. Should you have any questions, or wish to discuss accessibility before booking, please don't hesitate to email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
