Purpose and Aim
To provide an introduction to the importance of the maternal and infant relationship and its impact on infant development
The learner will be able to -
Describe the importance of:
a. an infant's ability to learn to regulate emotions.
b. an infant’s ability to socially interact with others.
c. positive attachment in the emotional development of the infant.
Describe a range of factors which may:
a. enhance the mother and infant relationship.
b. impair the mother and infant relationship.
Define toxic stress.Define the toxic trio. Describe the potential impact toxic stress has on an infant’s lifespan perspective.
1. Know the importance of the social and emotional development of the infant.
2. Know normal maternal thoughts and behaviours.
3. Know the factors that impact on the mother and infant relationship.
4. Understand why toxic stress is a safeguarding concern for the infant.
