RSPH Understanding Behaviour Change Level 2 (2 full days)
Lifestyle related morbidity and mortality is on the increase. We know 80% of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes cases and 33% of cancers could be prevented by following a healthy lifestyle. Lifestyle factors, particularly smoking, are also one of the biggest contributors to health inequalities in England. It is clear that prevention and behaviour change is key in improving the health of the nation.
The aim of this qualification is to provide the learner with the knowledge and confidence to offer opportunistic very brief interventions, or engage in brief interventions with, individuals about behaviour change which could improve their health and wellbeing.
The qualification has 4 outcomes and is assessed by multiple choice questions.
Outcome 1: Understand how to ensure communication with individuals is effective. All about good communication skills and what can help or hinder good communication.
Outcome 2: Know how to support individuals to adopt positive health behaviour. All about building 'enabling relationships' and the theories around behaviour change
Outcome 3: Understand how an individual can be supported in developing strategies enabling them to make lifestyle or health behaviour changes. All about brief intervention and the tools you can use to support behaviour change. Also some of the other factors that need to be considered when supporting people (confidentiality and competence).
Outcome 4 :Understand how to support an individual with a lifestyle or behaviour change implementation plan: All about action planning, signposting and evaluation.
This qualification will enable learners to understand the importance of listening, hearing and observing when establishing appropriate relationships with individuals for the purpose of helping them to develop strategies to undergo behaviour change. It will also help learners engage with individuals, if appropriate, for the purpose of brief advice and brief interventions and to support them in improving their health and wellbeing.
