Level I: IASTM Fundamentals

Physiquipe are delighted to invite you to our Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation workshop. IASTM is an increasingly popular technique used by many therapists around the world.

The Course Outline
– Theoretical basis of IASTM, review of current literature.
– Lecture format to introduce the concept of IASTM, evidence in the literature and physiological basis for using this as a soft tissue treatment technique.
– Basic handling, tool selection, and basic treatment strokes lab.
– Lab based basic skills component for participants to learn proper tool handing, basic treatment strokes, and proper tool selection based on target tissues.

About Ken Johnson
Ken is the Director of Rehabilitation Therapy Services Outreach for Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. His career path to clinical leadership at one of the nation’s leading academic medical institutions began 20 years ago after graduation from the University at Buffalo. Ken is the Administrator of the Johns Hopkins Hospital/George Washington University Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency and guest lecturer for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
This lab will use case studies involving the soft tissue of the thigh and forearm as a forgiving starting point to gain skill using the basic strokes covered in the introductory lab. Problem solving as well as treatment dosage will be emphasised. The second portion of this lab will involve treating the knee and elbow to introduce the student to the concept of treating around bony regions and joint components.
This lab will build on basic skills covered in exercise 1 moving to more complex regions such as the shoulder, hand, and neck. Patient positioning during treatment to maximise patient comfort will be emphasised. Also the concept of Regional interdependence will be stressed.
This lab will continue with the concepts focused on in the prior lab but move into the low back, hip, lower leg, and foot/ankle.
Who should attend?
They should also have a basic anatomical background and understand muscle, tendon, and ligament fibre orientation as well as physiological response to inflammation and injury. This course does not demand any prerequisites to be completed before attending.
