All day collecting - but nobody does more than a single one hour shift.
According to The Trussell Trust the numbers dependent on Food Banks in the UK remains 'extraordinarily high' with close to 3 million food parcels provided in 2024/25. The numbers needing these weekly food parcels have risen over the last 5 years and is now two and a half times the level seen a decade ago..
The Independent Food Aid Network has identified at least 1,172 independent food banks across the UK. There are also Salvation Army food banks, as well as food banks run from schools and hospitals. Beyond this, there are thousands of other food aid providers including soup kitchens and social supermarkets.
Lewes alone has three food banks and a community fridge. The sooner these are consigned to an unhappy history just like Oliver Twist's workhouse the better..But until that happy day our Christmas food banks collection - traditionally our biggest food banks collection of the year - will help ensure no household in Lewes goes hungry and can enjoy the treats so many of us take for granted over the holiday season.
Through the day our collectors will provide shoppers with a shopping list of food items. Our request to shoppers is to add just one additional purchase from our list to their shop and hand in to the stall we'll have outside the stores. Added together this amounts to one huge total.

The all-day collection is distributed direct to the three Lewes food banks: Fitzjohns, Landport, Malling plus the Lewes Community Fridge too.
