Event description

Description

Leading change and building resilience at the heart of local communities

Conference 2018 celebrates local government at the heart of placemaking, providing essential briefings on technology and innovation in highways, transport, environment and planning.

Government and councils alike must respond to new opportunities as well as threats to how we live and do business. Recent experience of floods, fires and drought will provide contrasting insight into how councils facilitate ‘24/7’ movement of people, goods and services.

Key Speakers invited:

  • Jesse Norman MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport

  • Stephen Joseph OBE, Executive Director, Campaign for Better Transport

  • Valerie Shawcross CBE, Deputy Mayor of London for Transport

  • Cumbria County Council – 'Resilience in a time of austerity fire, floods, snow and ice'

  • British Security Service 'Protecting assets and communities'

  • South West Highways Alliance 'Highways Infrastructure Resilience Assessment (HIRAM) - re-thinking preparedness and response'

Why attend?

Technology continues to rapidly advance but we are facing more frequent and intense disruption in local communities through floods, congestion, and unplanned incidents and attack.

Increased obesity, declining air quality, and growing congestion is the £80Bn toxic cocktail affecting UK productivity. Meanwhile Uber, dockless bikes, on demand cars and demand responsive bus networks create new and dynamic ways to travel. Demographic shift means fewer young people in major cities choosing a car; conversely rural bus decline demands fresh ways to meet basic travel needs.

You will learn of the latest work that is building flexibility into how we think and respond to meet these challenges:

  • Plan for future disruption using data to inform predictive modelling

  • Manage disruption and mitigate impact of events by co-ordinating action across Agencies

  • Communicate the right information to the right audiences at the right time, so they can respond, adjust plans, and minimise disruption

Further programme details will be added shortly...
