Time for Inclusive Education: Equality in the school community

In 2010 The Equality Act replaced nine major pieces of legislation and in theory it should make it easier for school leaders and teachers to understand their legal responsibilities and tackle inequalities in education, however many don’t understand the role they must play. Avoiding discrimination and promoting equality supports the agenda of improving the attainment and progress of all pupils, regardless of their circumstances and backgrounds. This course acts a foundation to ‘Time for Inclusive Education: LGBT visualisation in the curriculum’ and enables school communities to gain confidence in looking at direct and indirect discrimination, challenge discrimination when they see it, know how to handle a hate crime and make their schools a safe and secure place to learn in where we, as practitioners, get it right for every child.

Time for Inclusive Education: LGBT visualisation in the curriculum

In recent years LGBT education has moved beyond sex education – it is important for our young LGBT learners in our classroom to see visual role models being discussed, moments of their history investigated and a sense of acknowledgment within the curriculum they are part of. This course will give staff the confidence and resources to look at how to make their school curriculums more LGBT inclusive; moving beyond PSE and Sex Education. Each person on this course will bring their subject knowledge and be supported in delivering an engaging, thought provoking IDL project that enables our LGBT learners and their peers to see the positive contribution the community has given to all curriculum areas. You will leave will a working document that could be implemented in your school and a sense of getting it right every child.

Outcomes sought

Awareness on how to tackle inequalities and also see this in practice in the curriculum.

How does it link to the standards
