Event description

Description

This event will explore health inequalities experienced by older LGBT people and provide an opportunity to share and discuss best practice.

Older LGBT people have worse outcomes across different aspects of their lives including physical health, loneliness, social isolation, mental health, and experiences of violence. They also have poorer self-rated health and are more likely to have other conditions that impact their health and wellbeing.

Opening Doors London and Terrence Higgins Trust are joining forces to offer a workshop which will explore the health inequalities experienced by older LGBT people and how these may be addressed within the health and social care sectors. There will be four interactive sessions focused on:

  • Mental Health

  • Drugs and Alcohol

  • Dementia

  • HIV

Dr Michael Brady, National Advisor for LGBT Health, will share his thoughts on the work that needs to be done to improve the health and well-being of LGBT communities.

This workshop is targeted at health and social care professionals and organisations working with older LGBT people.

Cost: £27.00 + fees

About the organisers

Terrence Higgins Trust is the largest voluntary sector provider of HIV and sexual health services in the UK, running services out of local centres across Great Britain.

They aim to:
• contribute to the end of HIV transmissions and improve sexual health
• support people living with and affected by HIV and poor sexual health
• ensure that the voices of people affected by HIV are heard.

They do this by supporting people living with HIV and ensure their voices are heard, providing testing services for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, and helping the people using our services to achieve good sexual health.

As well as provide services, they campaign on issues from relationships and sex education in schools to the proper funding of HIV services.

Opening Doors London is the biggest charity providing information and support services specifically for older Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT+) people in the UK.

They are a membership organization providing regular social opportunities across the capital to help develop networks and communities for LGBT+ people, aged over 50.

They also offer specialist training and consultancy for statutory and voluntary health and social care organisations to help them understand the needs of older LGBT+ people.
