The LGBTQ+ and Health in Research event will provide an opportunity to researchers of all career levels across King’s to hold research stalls, network and give short presentations about their research in LGBTQ+ and health topic areas. This internal event will focus on internal networking and multidisciplinary approach to LGBTQ+ and health topics in research. There will
be lunch and further refreshments in the afternoon.

Bios of confirmed speakers and poster presenters:

Professor Laia Becares

Laia Bécares is Professor of Social Science and Health in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, SSPP. Her research interests are in studying the pathways by which the discrimination and marginalisation of people and places lead to social and health inequalities across the life course, with a specific focus on racism and heteronormativity as systems of oppression.

Helena Bladen

Helena Bladen is a third year PhD student in the Department of Psychology at King's College London. Helena’s research interests include factors affecting common mental health difficulties like depression and anxiety in LGBTQ+ people, and how to develop and improve psychological interventions for LGBTQ+ people experiencing difficulties with their mental health.

Dr Philip Bremner
Philip is a Lecturer in Law at The Dickson Poon School of Law. His research has focused on the legal recognition of gay and lesbian co-parenting arrangements following assisted reproduction and family formation through surrogacy. Philip is also interested in exploring the role of law and regulation in the provision of healthcare, particularly in relation to mental health.

Dr Ashley Brown

Dr Ashley Brown earned her PhD in Psychology in 2021 at KCL. Based in Health Psychology, she helps lead an NIHR project on managing sexual difficulties in people with Multiple Sclerosis. Her research and teaching focuses on intervention development, sexual functioning, gender and sexuality, and research methods. Clinically, she focuses on trauma and sex/relationship therapy. She provides counselling through cliniQ, specialising in support for trans, nonbinary, and gender diverse people.

Liam Cini O'Dwyer

Liam has taught science since 2003 and is currently a PhD candidate and lecturing in science education at King’s College London. As a LGBTI+ biologist and educationalist, Liam is interested in using biopsychosocial models of queer theory to understand identity formation, decision making and goal setting. He is fascinated by how the biological, psychological, and sociological aspects of identity overlap, intersect, and interact to create the diverse and fluid variations of gender and sexuality.

Professor Shintaro Okazaki

Shintaro Okazaki is Chair in Marketing at King’s Business School. Shintaro has published more than 100 articles in leading marketing and advertising journals over his career. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Advertising from 2014 to 2019. Shintaro is a past president of the European Advertising Academy. Before entering academia, he worked in the industry for more than 20 years, holding a managerial position at a multinational corporation in Tokyo.

Sarah Rabin

Sarah is a PhD candidate at IoPPN. She holds a BA (Hons) in psychology, and worked at the US Department of Veterans Affairs, where she researched suicidality before moving to London. She graduated with distinction from the War and Psychiatry MSc at King’s, where her dissertation focused on the final withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and its psychological impacts on UK Armed Forces military populations. Sarah worked as a Research Assistant prior to starting this PhD.

Fabio Serrato Radigonda

Fabio Serrato Radigonda is a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography, and a Graduate Teaching Assistant in both the Department of Geography and the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine at King’s College London. Fabio holds an MSc in Global Health and Social Justice (with Distinction) from King’s College London and an MA in Intercultural Communication (with Distinction) from the University of Manchester. He also holds a PGDip in Organisational Communication from the University of São Paulo (USP), a PGDip in Community Communication from the State University of Londrina (UEL), and a BA in Journalism from the University North of Paraná. He has more than 15 years of experience as a journalist in Brazil and England, mostly focusing on national and international coverage of health-related topics. He also worked as an interpreter for NHS England (English, Portuguese and Spanish), helping migrants access the health system.

Dr Qazi Rahman

Qazi Rahman is Senior Lecturer and co-director of the LGBTQ+ Mental Health Research in the Department of Psychology at the IoPPN. He is one of the world's leading authorities on the origins of sexual orientation and now studies the causes of sexual orientation-related disparities in mental health outcomes. He is co-author of the 2005 popular science book "Born Gay" by Peter Owen Publishers.

Professor Katharine Rimes

Kate Rimes is a Professor of Clinical Psychology and honorary Consultant Clinical Psychologist. She conducts research into processes underlying mental health problems and applies the findings to improve interventions. She co-leads the KCL Mental Health Research group - https://www.kcl.ac.uk/research/lgbtq-mental-health-research-group

Talita dos Santos Rosa

Talita is a PhD student with a Master’s in Health Sciences at the School of Nursing at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. She is a Visiting Doctoral Researcher at Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care, King's College London, and specializes in clinical research, health quality management, and rehabilitation, with an emphasis on pelvic floor disorders, assistive technologies, and incontinence in gender minorities, and people with IBD or disabilities.

Dr Adam Shepherd

Adam Shepherd is a trans man, junior doctor, and researcher. His research focuses on trans and gender diverse people’s experiences in healthcare and the discursive construction of gender.

Dr Paul Stokes

Dr Paul Stokes studied medicine at the University of Birmingham and completed clinical training in psychiatry at the Maudsley training programme, London. In his doctoral studies at Imperial College London, Paul used PET and fMRI neuroimaging to examine the role of neurotransmitter systems in mediating psychosis, addictions and mood disorders. Paul joined the Centre for Affective Disorders, KCL, in 2013 where his main research interest is to use neuroimaging to better understand brain mechanisms which mediate mood disorders and related co-morbid addictions. Paul leads functional neuroimaging studies and clinical trials to better understand and assess new ways of treating mood and cognitive symptoms in mood disorders. Paul is also a member of the UK Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, which makes recommendations to the UK Government on the control of recreational drugs. In his clinical work, Paul is a consultant psychiatrist with the tertiary National Affective Disorders Service at the Maudsley Hospital, a national specialist service for people with complex or treatment-resistant mood disorders.

Dr Alicia Tamarit Chuliá

Alicia is a Postdoctoral Researcher currently on a Visiting Appointment at King’s College London, where she focuses on mental health inequalities in the LGTBIAQ+ community. She is based at the University of Valencia, specialising in the mental health of queer women and non-binary people and the intersections between gender and sexual identity. She also combines my academic work with activism in science as a member of PRISMA (Association for Affective-Sexual and Gender Diversity in Science, Technology, and Innovation).

River Újhadbor

River Ujhadbor is a qualitative health researcher with a background in anthropology, social medicine and applied theatre. Their recent participatory action research project explored trans* inclusive healthcare practices catering to young people’s health needs. River is a Research Assistant at Population Health Sciences in developing a complex systems approach to social exclusion, stigma and homelessness. Their work draws on a wide range of skillsets such as youth work, storytelling, participatory action research, critical pedagogy and autonomous forms of organising. River is especially excited about collaborating on projects that work towards social transformation, build resources and advance the liberation of marginalised communities.
