Our next LGBTQ+ book club read will be the short story, The History of Sound by Ben Shattuck. This is the title story in a book containing other short stories and will be will be the only one we’ll be reading, as it will soon be released as a film starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor. The History of Sound recalls the journey of two men who meet around a piano in a smoky, dim bar, only to spend a summer walking the Maine woods collecting folk songs in the shadow of the First World War, forever marked by the odyssey. Published in 2024, it was received with critical acclaim, with The Times calling it “Triumphant” and the Sunday Post hailing it as “Exquisite”. We're reading The Wrong End of the Telescope by Rabih Alameddine

The Wrong End of the Telescope is a 2021 novel by Lebanese-American author Rabih Alameddine. The book follows Mina, a transgender doctor and immigrant from Lebanon, as she volunteers at a refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos. The novel, which won the 2022 PEN/Faulkner Award, tackles themes of displacement, identity, and empathy through its intimate, compassionate, and darkly humorous narrative.

All books can be borrowed from the library but please be aware numbers are limited and available on a first come, first served basis.
