About this event

In this taster session, we welcome LGBTQ+ folks to come together online to learn the foundations of improv, practise some scenes, and have a proper silly time.

What is improv?Improv, or improvisational theatre, is a style of acting where you perform scenes without a script. Famous examples of improv include Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Game Changer, and tabletop roleplaying games like Critical Role and Dimension 20. Improv is all about grounding yourself in the moment, seizing opportunities, and trusting your instincts and scene partners.

No experience required—everyone is welcome, whether it’s your first time trying improv or your hundredth. At the start of each session, we’ll go over the golden rules of improv so everyone feels confident and ready. Then, we’ll explore a foundational skill—such as creating characters or building a story—and practise through scenes. After a short break, we’ll end with an “improv jam” where we play a variety of games.

Improv... but online?!Yes!!

While improv is often done in person, it can be just as fun and creative online—just with a slightly different flavour. Online improv increases accessibility and offers a low-pressure environment from the comfort of your own home.

For online improv, you’ll need access to your phone / laptop, a camera, microphone, and a reliable internet connection. We recommend finding a quiet, comfy space for the session, and having a drink nearby (there’ll be time to make a cuppa during the break!).

If you have any questions or accessibility requirements, please get in touch at lgbtqcc@gmail.com

We do our best improv—and have the most fun—when everyone feels safe and supported. If there are any topics or themes you'd prefer to avoid in scenes, please let us know in advance. We'll also recap a list of themes to avoid at the start of each session to help keep things safe and enjoyable for all.

More about our facilitator:

Katherine Holmes (they/them) is a Quantum Physicist, triple A-activist (asexual, aromantic and agender) and Improviser! Katherine started their improv journey in 2019 and has since practised improv with several in-person and online networks. During their PhD, Katherine collaborated with well-established improv teacher Justine Jones to deliver improv sessions for university students, helping them build confidence and prepare for public speaking. Ultimately, their love for improv stems from the community it fosters and the laughs shared along the way!
