About this event

Family & Education • Education

Have you noticed an increase in requests/visits from home educators? Are you wondering how to engage further with families whose children are educated outside of school?

According to Department for Education data, the number of children in elective home education in England is 150,000 and growing. This webinar will explore how libraries can support the changing education landscape in the UK.

Nicky McIntosh will share insights from recent research with these audiences, how they can benefit from libraries and how libraries can be most effective and welcoming. Nicky is a Museum Consultant and author of Group for Education in Museums new toolkit Supporting Museums to Engage Children Educated Outside of School.

We will explore the following themes and activities:

  • Landscape of home education in the UK & growing demand
  • Different types of non-school education
  • Barriers to school attendance
  • What non-school audiences need
  • Getting started: how to build this audience
  • Good practice from the UK and US

Nicky will draw on her lived experience of barriers to school attendance as a parent, as well as her professional practice as a curator, learning manager and consultant.

This webinar is aimed at anyone working within a library, cultural, heritage or learning environment or interested in improving interactions with home educators.
