Library "make and do" camp
Tue, 30 Aug 2016, 10:00 – Wed, 31 Aug 2016, 16:00 BST
This is a two day event with a difference!
Library Camps can be really positive events, but tend to lack concrete outcomes afterwards. This event is intended to have the same positive vibe as well as being as affordable as possible, but based around creating materials rather than just talking about stuff (hence allowing 2 days!).
#tag for the event is #makelibcamp on whatever social media you fancy...
The theme for the two day camp will be creating materials for library teaching, preferably active learning materials (including games). Some prototyping materials will be provided, along with a couple of laptops and a few other bits and pieces.
So if you want time, space, and a helpful community to revamp your teaching materials, this could be the ideal opportunity...
The day will be based around open space type ideas (like library camps - you come and go from groups as you please, everyone's ideas are equally valued, and ideas are generated / enacted by whoever happens to be present at the time). The two days will be based around:
- Idea generation / pitching - In the run up to the event and on the morning of the first day, people can pitch ideas for materials they would like to create. People would then organise into groups based around the pitches.
- Creating materials - The groups would create materials for library teaching based on the pitches (though these can evolve). Some paper and IT materials that may be useful will be provided.
- Sharing materials within the camp - at set points during the camp, everyone will come together to share materials so far. Most of these will be a chance to get feedback on prototypes, with a "final" sharing at the end where we hope materials will be in a (largely?) finished state.
- Sharing materials outside the camp - It is a condition of attending that everyone booking a place consents that materials produced during the camp will be made available under a CC BY licence. We will share the materials as widely as we can during and after the camp.
Because it is expected that people will start producing materials on the first morning and continue until the afternoon of the second day, there would be little point in just coming for the second day, so please only book if you think you can come for most or all of the event.
If <10 people book, the event may be cancelled. If over 10 book, tickets include a place for one attendee, refreshments, use of materials. If enough people book (or we get sponsorship to cover it), we may able to cover food for lunchtimes (not the evening) on both days. This would be confirmed by email in the run up to event - if we don't say otherwise, assume no food will be provided!
A small number of free places are provided for people who genuinely can't afford the ticket price themselves, and whose employers won't pay. If you really need a free ticket, then book it. Otherwise please don't, you will be depriving someone else of a ticket. There are also a couple of free tickets available for people who can illustrate or are able to operate as graphic designers to help turn prototypes into finished materials during the camp.
A second camp is intended - this time residential over 2 days (so will be more expensive). This is expected to be 12th / 13th December and will have a slightly different theme around escape rooms and games for library teaching.
