Event description

Description

Join us at LCBA in the evening of 22 February for the start of a new term of our study group The Joy of Reading.

We’ll begin with a session that brings us out of seasonal hibernation and back into sharing books and conversations, with a Feminist Book Swap and a couple of short readings to discuss on the night.

After swapping, eating and chatting we’ll take some time to discuss a couple of texts about feminist publishing practices in the UK and US context:

  • Preface to Kristen Hogan’s The Feminist Bookstore Movement: Lesbian Antiracism and Feminist Accountability (2016)

  • An interview with Sheba Feminist Press from off our backs, (march 1986 edition)

Bring along your well-loved feminist titles for swapping—old and new, zines and paperbacks, sci-fi, theory or fiction.

Light refreshments will be provided but feel free to bring along something to snack on or share.

The studio can get a bit chilly, so please dress warmly or bring an extra layer with you.

We hope to see you there!

Schedule:
7-8 book swap
8-9 discussion on reading materials

The Joy of Reading is organised by Esther McManus and Sam Whetton. It's free to join and open to all those interested in publishing, print and book production. In these sessions we discuss texts from the LCBA library and beyond, giving time and space to reflect on how these might inform the work we make and the way we engage with books and texts.

Accessiblitiy

LCBA is wheelchair accessible and barrier free.

There are accessible and gender neutral toilets.

Free tap water, tea, coffee and vegan refreshments are available during the evening.

The sound levels are generally low in the library (especially in the evenings), but the library is in a studio block and therefore some noise may be perceptible from other units.

The library is well lit and scent-free, but scents from other studio units may be perceptible when accessing the library via the corridor (solvents).

There are high stools to sit on in the library but seating with backs can be reserved in advance if necessary.

Public transport options to LCBA can be seen here: https://londonbookarts.org/about/ but the routes from stations

to LCBA has uneven pavements that are narrow.

There are four disabled parking spaces just across the road from the entrance to LCBA.

No ID is necessary for entry.

Please contact Esther & Sam at LCBA for more information on access (hello@londonbookarts.org)
