Event description
A workshop to collaboratively develop ways for local people to study wildlife and change on & around Mablethorpe's tide bell structure.

About this Event

you are invited to a FREE one-day workshop in Mablethorpe to help shape a new project to record and monitor local marine and coastal wildlife and environmental change.

The Bell installation at Mablethorpe is one of a number of community owned Time and Tide Bell artworks based in coastal locations around the country. Its coastal location provides a wonderful platform for observing life, on, in, under and around the coast and sea. The Bell's intended long-life will provide a point from which to observe how this view might change over time.

The Marine Biological Association and the Time and Tide Bell Project have been given an exciting opportunity thanks to funding from UKRI to work with local people to explore how this cultural focal point can act as a catalyst for the collection of information about the local environment and wildlife, by developing a citizen science initiative, which uses current technology to collect data over time. this project gives an opportunity to provide resources, equipment, training and support for local people wishing to get involved. This workshop is the first stage in a project, which will involve further opportunities for those wishing to become more involved.

We will be holding a one day workshop, to introduce key topics and examples of citizen science projects and resources. We will visit the tide bell on the day for inspiration and during the workshop, participants and organizers will work together to explore and develop ideas for citizen science activities that will be fully resourced and piloted in the spring.

We are inviting anyone with an interest in the project, including, but not limited to: teachers; youth and community group representatives; recreational and commercial users; artists; business owners; tour operators; informal educators; dog walkers; drone fliers; and amateur naturalists. If you are unsure whether the workshop might be suitable for you, email: peterg@timeandtidebell.org for more information.

The workshop will take place in Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire at a venue within a short distance of the Time and Tide Bell to be confirmed soon.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided for all attendees.

What will this project lead to? It’s impossible to say until the day is over! However, similar events will take place in Appledore on the North Devon coast, and Morecambe in Lancashire. One possibility – and hope – is that we will be able to develop a project that can work at a national scale, sharing data and energy, making the whole greater than the sum of the parts. Another is that the unique circumstances and tidal range at Appledore take things in a very particular direction. Or both….. We have sufficient resources at this stage to purchase limited amounts of equipment for the project’s future.

It is important to us that everyone is able to attend the event who wants to, so if you are interested but think you may be unable to attend for any reason, please get in touch and we will try to offer assistance where we can.
