Event description

Description

Your own Blue Planet - Live! Glimpses of Ocean Life - marinas and the lessons they can teach. Discover the variety and complexity of the marine life around Mayflower Marina.

Each 90 minute session will start by gathering some plankton for microscope viewing on the big screen in the SonarDyne floating classroom. Plankton provides half the world's oxygen and underpins practically everything that lives in the sea, either by being food, or being its home in early life. You will be amazed at its beauty and the stories of the creatures that live there. There will also be live video of life on the seabed beneath the pontoons - probably squabbling shore crabs, but other creatures may get a look in. The second module will look at what lives on the pontoons, having spent its early life in the plankton. Much of it then spends its time eating plankton and other stuff suspended in the water. Some of it should be here, but increasingly we are finding Invasive Non Native Species attached to the pontoons that shouldn't be here. Quite what effects they will have may not yet be fully known, but some of them will definitely not be good. You may be surprised at how some of these aliens got to our waters - and not a little concerned.

The two modules are led by experts from the Marine Biological Association.

There will be three sessions starting at 1000, 1100 and 1200, meeting at the top of the ramp leading to the pontoons. You will need non slip footwear and lifejackets/buoyancy aids, and maybe waterproofs.

Participants are limited to 10 for each session with priority given to Mayflower Marina berth holders on a separate private Eventbrite event. The tickets on this page are open to all.

Plymouth has signed up for the International City Nature Challenge, in which cities try to identify as many species within their boundaries as possible. You can take part by creating an iNaturalist account (go to www.inaturalist.org/signup) and logging any species you see over that weekend.
