Description

Artist Ann Witheridge, founder of London Fine Art Studios, returns to Leighton House Museum to lead a new series of her popular life-drawing sessions in the studio of the former president of the Royal Academy.

Each afternoon will consist of a mixture of short exercises and longer poses, with reference to the permanent collection and expert tuition from Ann.

Open to artists of all levels. Beginners are advised to book the full course; for those joining only sessions 5 and 6, drawing is advisable. Students will work on textured paper in charcoal or pencil. Materials will be available to purchase on the day or students can bring supplies with them. Leighton House Museum will provide boards and easels.

Session 1 Tuesday 12 February 2019 1 – 4pm

Short poses

  • Short sketches with a focus on proportion and gesture & anatomy
  • Charcoal/graphite on paper


Session 2 Tuesday 12 March 2019 1:30 – 4:30pm

x4 longer poses

  • Building on proportion, shadow shapes, and mass
  • Charcoal/graphite on paper

Session 3 Tuesday 30 April 2019 1 – 4pm

x2 1.5 hour poses

  • Having found the shadow shapes, students will build the half tones and lights
  • Sanguine, chalks, and charcoal on toned paper

Session 4 Tuesday 21 May 2019 1 – 4pm

x2 1.5 hour poses

  • Introducing temperature and colour
  • Working with pastels, sanguine, and chalks on toned paper

Session 5 Tuesday 18 June 2019 1- 4pm

Long 3hr pose

  • Experimenting with the advantages of using a limited palette
  • Oil paints/pastels

Session 6 Tuesday 9 July 2019 1- 4pm

Long 3hr pose

  • Designing the background with an extended palette
  • Oil paints/pastels


London Fine Art Studios

London Fine Art Studios was set up to teach the craft of drawing and painting using traditional techniques. The school offers a rigorous training programme and welcomes students of all levels, providing a supportive environment in which to learn. The core principles of classical training can be applied to every subject, from still life to landscape, figures to portraiture, allowing the artist greater freedom to express and develop their skills and knowledge.
