Life Drawing in Bristol: Tutored Drop-Ins

A monthly drop-in tutored session with a relaxed approach - for those who don;t know where to start or who would benefit from some professional advice or guiadance as they build their relationship with drawing.

Every level of artist is welcome, from complete beginners onwards. This class is intended to be a gentle dip in to tutoring, to improve your figure drawing skills and connect with your creative self.

The Class

  • Each session will start with some basic techniques to help you relax in to drawing, and learn how to build a figure quickly.
  • It's a drop in, not a course, so September, October and November's classes are exactly the same. We do have a 6-week course starting in October 2025 if you prefer that!
  • These exercises are designed to help you connect with drawing, rather than rely on maths and measurements. There's no cheat codes or hacks to drawing, just building your confidence up!
  • We'll then move into time for free drawing, where everyone will receive 1-on1 advice as you draw
  • ANY level of artist is welcome here, but this class is best suited to beginners or people who want a bit of guidance or advice on their work
  • If you prefer a more structured and thorough approach, please book a place on our Tutored Life Drawing class, consisting of 6 weekly 2 hour sessions starting in October 2025.

The Essentials

  • The sessions run from 6:30 - 8:30pm.
  • The class is at Hamilton House, Stokes Croft, Bristol.
  • ALL abilities welcome, even if you've never picked up a pencil before!
  • We will be using charcoal or graphite powder, charcoal and pencils. They are all included in the price of the class, along with paper.
  • Please wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty!

Fancy an untutored approach instead? Find our weekly class here.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring anything?

No, all the materials you need will be provided for you, but please feel free to bring a sketchbook or your own materials. If you do this, we will be using charcoal powder and sticks, graphite pencils, and eraser, and a sharpener.

Is the class wheelchair accessible?

Yes, there is a ramp available via The Canteen bar downstairs, and then you can use our lift. We're on the 3rd floor.

Is there parking?

Hamilton House does not have a public car park, but most of the on-street parking nearby is either permitted and free after 5pm, or have pay-and-display machines.

How do I get there?

We're situated right in the middle of Stokes Croft, Bristol, above The Canteen bar. Enter through the double doors and someone will be on reception to show you up. There are lots of bus stops within a couple of minutes walk, and we're about a 15 minute walk from Montpelier train station.

Do I need experience?

No! The aim of this class is to build your confidence, and introduce you to looking and drawing in your own style.
