Event description

Description

Have you always dreamed of being a writer? If you have always loved writing, and want to write about your life experiences in a more structured way, this workshop helps give you the tools and framework to do that.

Whether you want to discover your writing voice, start writing as a regular hobby or eventually write a book, award-winning author and journalist Poorna Bell will talk you through how to do that, as well as work individually on the day with each person on your own writing.

Poorna is an award-winning author and journalist published with Simon & Schuster who has written across a broad range of writing styles including blogs and opinion, and has published two books.

What will you learn?

- Poorna will talk through writing memoir and opinion, how she does it, and what works for her
- What makes a piece of writing moving and compelling
- About the different styles of writing and what makes them distinct, and what might suit you
- How to overcome writer's block, develop focus and start writing
- Navigating self-doubt and fear of rejection
- Learning how to self-edit and commit to a particular topic/area/style
- How to avoid waffle - what you leave out is as important as what you put in
- How to portray your characters and story arc
- How to choose what parts of your story you want to include for a memoir
- Discipline: working out your writing muscle and techniques that can help
- Is it a book or a feature: learning what makes a book versus a one-off article
- How to get your work published

1-2-1

There will be a writing portion of the workshop where you take the tools we have learned, do some individual writing. I'll then go round to each person and talk to you individually about anywhere you find yourself getting stuck.

Ticket price includes: A beautiful notebook from The Completist and pen from Veronica Dearly. Coffee, tea, snacks. There is time included for a tea break (snacks included) and lunch break, but lunch isn't provided in the ticket price - there is food in the venue, or loads of places nearby in Liverpool Street. The venue is a six-minute walk from Liverpool Street station.
